The European Union will deploy over 120 observers to ensure transparency in Bolivia’s 2025 general elections.

The European Union is sending over 120 election observers to Bolivia to monitor the upcoming general elections on August 17, 2025. This mission aims to ensure a transparent, fair, and credible electoral process amid a highly polarized political environment.

La Paz, August 13, 2025 – The European Union (EU) announced the deployment of a mission composed of over 120 observers for the general elections to be held in Bolivia on August 17, 2025. The primary objective of this team is to oversee the entire electoral process to ensure transparency, legitimacy, and respect for democratic rights in a politically polarized context.

The EU electoral observation mission is made up of 11 specialized analysts, 32 long-term observers, and approximately 50 short-term observers. Additionally, a delegation from the European Parliament will accompany the election day. MEP Davor Stier leads this mission, which will cover all phases of the process: from candidate registration, the electoral campaign, and election day, to the announcement of results and the resolution of any electoral disputes.

Long-term observers began their work weeks before the election to assess the political environment and electoral logistics, while short-term observers will focus on monitoring the opening, conduct, and closing of polling stations on election day. Specialized analyses will also be carried out in areas such as electoral technology, media, and social networks.

This deployment is complemented by close collaboration with Bolivia’s Ombudsman Office, which will mobilize over a thousand national observers for additional monitoring, thereby strengthening supervision and democratic processes.

Since 2000, the EU has deployed more than 180 electoral missions in 65 countries, reaffirming its commitment to democratic processes in Bolivia, where it has previously provided observation missions on multiple occasions.

The presence and joint work of international and national observers aim to ensure that the 2025 elections take place in a framework of normalcy, confidence, and respect for the popular will.
