“Great person”: the unexpected praise from Donald Trump to Rodrigo Paz at the Shield of the Americas summit

In a moment that reflected a shifting diplomatic tone in the hemisphere, U.S. President Donald Trump greeted Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz with an unexpected personal remark during the opening of the Shield of the Americas Summit in Miami. Before delivering his official address, Trump turned toward Paz and said: “President of Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz, thank you very much. Great person.” The brief exchange quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the gathering.

The comment did not appear in Trump’s formal speech but during the protocol greetings moments before the event officially began. Even so, the remark stood out as one of the few personalized acknowledgments the U.S. president made to leaders present at the summit.

The Miami meeting aims to shape a hemispheric agenda focused on regional security, the fight against organized crime, migration management and strategic cooperation. Several Latin American presidents attended the forum, which is increasingly seen as a platform for reinforcing political and security alliances across the Americas.

For Bolivia, the optics carry particular significance. Relations between La Paz and Washington have experienced nearly two decades of diplomatic tension, especially following the breakdown of ties during the presidency of former Bolivian leader Evo Morales.

While no bilateral agreements were announced, the brief exchange between Trump and Paz suggested a warmer tone in U.S.–Bolivia relations. In diplomatic settings, gestures like these — however informal — are often read as early signals of political openness or renewed dialogue.
